Dr. Brandecker

Edward J. Brandecker, MD, FABPM&R

  • Board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Board certified in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Dr. Brandecker is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), with a subspecialty in spine. Dr. Brandecker received his Bachelor's degree in 1980 from Fairfield University in Connecticut, graduating magna cum laude. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and completed his residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore inter-institutional program. Dr. Brandecker served as chief resident during his final year. In 1988, he joined the faculty of the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Brandecker moved to Abilene, Texas, in 1992 and was instrumental in the training and development of the staff and programs of the Hendrick Center for Rehabilitation during its first three years.

Dr. Brandecker is a cofounder of SpineAbilene. He has presented numerous symposiums to the public, including risk managers and insurance adjusters. Dr. Brandecker is also an oral examiner for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He specializes in the nonsurgical diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and spinal disorders.

Dr. Kalafut

Roberta M. Kalafut, DO, FABPM&R

Dr. Kalafut is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with a subspecialty in spine. She received her Bachelors degree in 1980 from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, and her medical degree from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Kalafut completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore's inter-institutional program. She served as chief resident during her final year in residency. Upon completion of residency, Dr. Kalafut went into private practice. In 1992, she moved to Abilene, Texas, and was instrumental in the training and development of the staff and programs of the Hendrick Center for Rehabilitation during its first three years. Dr. Kalafut is a co-founder of SpineAbilene

She has presented numerous symposiums to the public, risk managers, and insurance adjusters. She is an oral examiner for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a member of the Texas Medical Board. Dr. Kalafut's practice concentrates on the nonsurgical management of women's issues, spine and musculoskeletal disorders, as well as industrial medicine.

Dr. Trifilo

Richard D. Trifilo, MD, MPH, DABFM*, DABPM**

Dr. Trifilo is board certified in Occupational Medicine and Aerospace Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is also board certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Trifilo has joined the SpineAbilene Occupational Medicine staff in 2006 after completion of a twenty-six year career in the United States Air Force.

Dr. Trifilo received his medical degree from Saint Louis University, in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1980. He completed a three year residency in Family Practice at USAF Medical Center, Scott AFB. After serving as a Family Practice physician, Chief of Clinic Services, and Chief of Aeromedical Services, he completed a three year combined residency in Aerospace and Occupational Medicine at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine in 1995, during which he also completed a Masters in Public Health. After completing these residencies, Dr. Trifilo joined the staff of the Headquarters, Air Mobility Command Surgeon as the Chief of Aerospace Medicine. In that position he was responsible for the implementation of all Aeromedical and Occupational physical standards, to include strict compliance with all Public Health, OSHA, and AFOSH requirements.

Dr. Trifilo worked with the Air Force Physical Standards Committee to transform the physical exam process to one of Preventive Health Assessments; improving the efficiency as well as the quality of occupational exams. Dr. Trifilo was a guest lecturer, and established an Occupational Medicine Clerkship with Saint Louis University. He was a member of the Air Force Integrated Process Team for Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health.

Since 1998, Dr. Trifilo has held a series of command positions at the squadron and group level within Air Mobility Command, Pacific Air Forces Command, and Air Combat Command; additionally completing a Master of Strategic Studies degree in 2000.

Dr. Trifilo culminated his Air Force career as the commander of the 7th Medical Group at Dyess AFB, Texas. With each facility command he brought the knowledge of Occupational Medicine directives to the practical level, ensuring complete success of programs, evidenced by excellent inspection reports, and more importantly, by outstanding statistics of force health readiness and mission completion.

Dr. Trifilo is a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, an associate fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association, a charter member of the American Society of Aerospace Medicine Specialists, and a member of the Society of USAF Flight Surgeons.

Dr. Trifilo is currently the only physician for approximately three hours of Abilene who is board certified in Occupational Medicine and is a Certified Medical Review Officer [MRO]. He offers the corporate client extensive knowledge and experience in the field of occupational work injury and occupational health.

Dr. Trifilo brings a unique medical practice to the corporate sector of Abilene and the surrounding area – A practice with a sole focus on Occupational Medicine and Employee Health.
